Area codes
of Taiwan

A Taiwanese area code is one to three digits after the trunk 0 — 02 Taipei, 04 Taichung, 07 Kaohsiung, 0836 the Matsu islands — and there are thirteen of them, one per county or special municipality, a few shared. This map draws each on the divisions that dial it, with Kinmen, Wuqiu, Matsu and Pratas in frames of their own.

How to read the map. Each patch is a code and the numeral on it is what you dial there, with the area it is named for beneath. The plan gave the main island its codes from north to south — 2 the Taipei basin with Keelung, 3 from Taoyuan round the north coast to Hualien, 4 Taichung and Changhua, 5 Chiayi and Yunlin, 6 Tainan, 7 Kaohsiung, 8 Pingtung — and then a third digit where a county was split off later: 037 Miaoli from 03, 049 Nantou from 04, 089 Taitung from 08. Penghu dials Tainan's 06; the Fujian islands have their own, 082 Kinmen, 0826 Wuqiu and 0836 Matsu. Pratas, 440 km out in the South China Sea, is part of Kaohsiung and dials 07; so does Taiping in the Spratlys, which no boundary file has.

Where the lines come from. The NCC assigns each code to counties and special municipalities whole, so the lines are the divisions' own, from geoBoundaries' OpenStreetMap-derived layer. Wuqiu is the one township with a code of its own and comes from the township layer; Kaohsiung's feature reaches Pratas, which is clipped off the main frame and given one of its own. The Regions grouping is the digit after the 0; Counties outlines the twenty-two divisions.
