Area codes
of Slovakia

A Slovak area code is two digits after the trunk 0 — 041 Žilina, 055 Košice, 048 Banská Bystrica — except Bratislava's, which is the single digit 2. The plan of 2001 has twenty-five primary areas in four secondary ones: 2 the capital, 3 the west, 4 the centre, 5 the east. This map draws each code on the districts whose municipalities dial it, coloured by that digit.

How to read the map. Each patch is a code and the numeral on it is what you dial there, with the primary area it is named for beneath. The colour is the digit after the 0, which is the plan's secondary area: 2 is Bratislava, 3 western Slovakia from Senica to Levice, 4 the centre from Žilina to Lučenec, 5 the east from Poprad to Michalovce. The codes do not follow today's eight regions — Prievidza's 046 is in the Trenčín Region but dialled as central Slovakia, and the Regions grouping shows where the two disagree.

Where the lines come from. The regulator publishes the codes with the primary area each serves and no boundary. The code each district dials is taken from Wikidata, where nearly every municipality records its own and each sits in its district: a district takes the code most of its municipalities dial. In seventeen districts they split, and there the line is the district's edge rather than the true one — Nové Zámky is drawn whole in 035 though Štúrovo dials 036, and Revúca in 058 though its south is 047. Bratislava's five and Košice's four boroughs are districts of their own and take the city's code. The boundaries are the ZBGIS districts of the Geodesy, Cartography and Cadastre Authority.

Sources. Codes: Wikipedia, Telephone numbers in Slovakia — the 25 national destination codes of the 2001 plan with the primary area each is named for. Code per district: Wikidata, local dialling code (P473) and district (P131) of Slovak municipalities; a district takes the majority. Geometry: ZBGIS district boundaries (ÚGKK SR, geoportal.sk), redistributed in WGS 84 in drakh/slovakia-gps-data; dissolved by code, by secondary area and by region.
