Area codes
of Turkey

A Turkish number is ten digits after the trunk 0, and the first three are the province: 312 is Ankara, 232 İzmir, 224 Bursa. Every province has one, and Istanbul has two, 212 on the European shore of the Bosphorus and 216 on the Asian. This map draws each code on its province, coloured by the first digit — 2 in the west, 3 through the centre and the south, 4 in the east.

How to read the map. Each patch is a province and the numeral on it is its code, with the name beneath. The colour is the first digit, which the plan handed out from west to east: 2 is Marmara and the Aegean, from Edirne's 284 to Muğla's 252; 3 the centre and the Mediterranean, from Ankara's 312 to Hatay's 326, with the central Black Sea coast up to Samsun's 362; 4 the east and the eastern Black Sea, from Ordu's 452 to Hakkâri's 438. Istanbul is the one province with two codes, and the line between them is the Bosphorus: 212 to the west, 216 to the east, with the Princes' Islands on the Asian side.

Where the lines come from. The codes are Türk Telekom's, one per province, as Wikipedia's table lists them, and the provinces are geoBoundaries' from OpenStreetMap. Istanbul's two shores are not two features in any boundary file, so the province is taken apart into its polygons and each is given the code of the shore its centre is on; the islets off Beşiktaş fall west of the line and the Princes' Islands east, as they should. Northern Cyprus dials 392 as a Turkish area code and is in the panel, not on the map.

Sources. Codes: Wikipedia, Telephone numbers in Turkey — every area code with its province, after Türk Telekom's list. Geometry: geoBoundaries, Turkey ADM1 (simplified), from OpenStreetMap under CC BY-SA; dissolved by code, by region and by province.
