Atlas

Area codes
of Spain

Every Spanish landline is nine digits, all of them dialled, and the first two or three are the province: 950 is Almería, 981 A Coruña, 93 the whole of Barcelona. That makes this the one map in the atlas where the coloured area and the code are the same fact, so there are no dots — the number is written on the province itself.

How to read the map. Each patch is a province and the numeral on it is what you dial there — the two facts are the same, which is why this map has no dots. The colour is the block the code sits in, the second digit: 95x is Andalusia, 98x the north-west, 97x the Ebro and the Balearics. Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia hold a run of codes rather than one, so they carry the run.

The 8xx twins. Since 2017 most provinces have a second code in the 8xx block — 850 beside 950 in Almería, 856 beside 956 in Cádiz. It is the same province with more numbers available, not a different area, so it is listed in the panel and left off the map: printing both would double every numeral to say one thing. Seventeen provinces have one so far.

Ceuta and Melilla. The two cities on the African coast are not drawn. The source table lists no code for either, and a patch is a claim — better an acknowledged gap than a guess that looks authoritative. Everything else Spain dials geographically is here.
