Area codes
of Austria

An Austrian area code is one to four digits after the trunk 0 — 01 for Vienna, 0316 Graz, 0512 Innsbruck, 04852 Lienz — and there are about a thousand of them, one per local network. The first digit is the region, roughly a state each; the second narrows it to a district or two. This map gathers the codes by their first two digits into thirty-seven groups, drawn on the municipalities, and colours them by the first.

How to read the map. Each patch is every code that begins with the same two digits, and the numeral on it is those digits — 031 is Graz and its country, 073 Linz, 051 Innsbruck; Salzburg's own 0662 sits in 066. The town beneath is the principal local network of the group. The colour is the first digit, which the plan handed out by state: 1 is Vienna, 2 Lower Austria with the north of Burgenland, 3 Styria with the south of Burgenland, 4 Carinthia and East Tyrol, 5 Tyrol and Vorarlberg, 6 Salzburg, 7 Upper Austria. Click a patch for its codes; the panel lists every one of the thousand with the local network it is named for.

Where the lines come from. The regulator, the RTR, publishes each code with the name of its local network and no geography. The code each municipality dials is taken from Wikidata, where the municipalities' own articles record it, for most of the 2,097; a few more are the municipality a local network is named for, and what is left — mostly the merged municipalities of Styria, whose articles are newer than the data — takes the code of the nearest municipality that has one. A municipality with two local networks is drawn in the one named for it. The patches are the Federal Office of Metrology and Survey's municipal boundaries, dissolved by group.

Sources. Codes: Wikipedia, Telephone numbers in Austria — every area code with the local network it is named for, after the RTR's list. Code per municipality: Wikidata, local dialling code (P473) and Gemeindekennzahl (P964) of every municipality of Austria. Geometry: geoBoundaries, Austria ADM3 (simplified), from the Federal Office of Metrology and Survey under CC BY-SA; dissolved by group, by region and by state.
